And they are nice. Some of them more than others, sure, but we all help one another out in our community. When we didn't have our gifts, they were there for us because we've been there for them.
Our gifts were given to us to help the community.
[Look, unlike her children, Julieta has had this hammered into her for 50 years.
She's the eldest, the responsible one, the healer, the one who can be depended on for anything, the one who has to be depended on for anything, who has to keep a cool head while Pepa's emotions are broadcasted to the world against her will, and Bruno's visions come and go when they please leaving him stuck forever as a bearer of bad news to many.
But Julieta? She's got it under control, always. She has to.
She was the one who has to be in charge when their mamá isn't around, whether she liked it or not, so she learned to like it because what was the other option? There wasn't one.
She's going to be a tougher nut to crack.]

...He knows he should leave this alone. This isn't his family, so really it's not his business. There's even a long pause where he considers doing just that.
But he remembers all too well being raised on words like these. Use your powers to save the world, to help everyone. And that it was never good enough. The people never loved him, they just loved what he could do for them. And he knows from the stuff Bruno has said that none of this is as nice as she's making it sound.
It's crap. And what's worse, it's crap she might wind up spreading to her kids and continuing the cycle until they really do wind up like the Wilders. ]
Oh yeah, they sound real nice. Especially how they ostracized your brother for doing nothing wrong until he hid in the walls. Or is that fine because his gift wasn't helping the community?
You're a parent, for heaven's sake. Your job should be looking after your kids. Your kids that are watching you and your actions for guidance. Do you really want this to be the message they pick up on? That it's ok that their community only values them because they got some useful magic tricks?
Because trust me, it won't stop at hiding in walls the next time one of you fails to be helpful if you keep this attitude going.

He's clearly upset at her. Her eyes narrow at him questioning her parenting when he doesn't live with them. She frowns as he continues to blame her for apparently... everything in his anger.
And she's grateful he's angry FOR her children and her brother.
Like right now.
She can't get mad at Zelos. Or rather, she won't get mad at him and his accusations. She's too used to being accused of lacking either by her own mother or the town. Julieta has been yelled at and screamed at plenty for not being able to heal everything. She's got just as much pressure on her to always be on.
So, she takes a deep breath and accepts, to some degree the criticism lobbed at her.]
I can only try to keep doing better for the sake of my family.
Thank you for being mad on their behalf. It's frustrating to be the only one sometimes.
[Cause, not that you asked, Zelos, but she IS constantly standing up for the children. She IS trying to remind them they are more than their gifts.
Just because she's not screaming to the heavens "Yeah, my community took advantage of us!" because she's a grown woman who doesn't air her dirty laundry to some random stranger she literally just met, doesn't mean she isn't frustrated or trying her best to protect her family.]

There's a long period as he tries to respond, needing to make several attempts before he sends something]
Yeah, I know. Just...actions speak as loud as words, you know? That's all I'm getting at.
I know you're not to blame for everything, and you're just as much as victim as the rest of them to the whole "special duty" deal.
But none of it's really my business, so I'll shut up about it.
[He recognizes he overstepped his bounds and blew up, possibly unfairly. Nngh, he really should just avoid stuff like this]

And you even care about me and we just met.
You've got a good heart.

????
These are not how these things go. Not at all. And what more, people don't usually tell him stuff like that. How- what do you do?!? No way that's right?? His brain can't even wrap around a possible response. And the longer it takes for him to think of something, the harder it is to reply so uh..
