OLD PAGE. GO TO THE CURRENT APP PAGE HERE

Okay so application is a very strong word and not entirely accurate, but it's a term we all know so bear with me. This is the page where you officially submit your character information for the game! Apps will not really be judged on its contents but more making sure everything fits into the setting of the game. If you want more information on the setting, please check out the FAQ!

How do I join the game?
This app page is currently open! Apps can be submitted by players at anytime. Apps are reviewed by the mod on Sundays.

To join the game, the only big thing is you'll require an invite from another player. Players can invite up to 2 people per month. Just be sure to list their name and have the person confirm that they did invite you either by contacting the mods directly or commenting to your app. Apps that do not have a invitation confirmation will not be looked at by the mods. If a confirmation does not come within two Sundays of the app's submission, it'll be automatically rejected.

A new player must be in the game one full month from their app acceptance date before they can invite another player (meaning if their app was approved on September 18th, they can invite people starting October 18th). This is so the new player has a chance to get acclimated to the game and community enough to assist any friends they later invite to the game.

Players who were in the game but who dropped/were swept will not need an invite to rejoin the game for up to one month after their drop date. After that month, they will require an invite to rejoin.

Once you submit your app, you'll get a welcome comment confirming that everything is a-okay. The only times I'll ask for revisions is if there needs to be a fix with power purchases or possessions.

Is there a player cap?
There is a player cap! Kaisou allows a total of 75 players. Should we ever reach cap, apps will close until openings become available.

PLAYER SLOTS: 46/75 filled.

What kind of characters do you allow?
Most things! Canon characters, Original characters, CRAU, AU characters - the list goes on. Double characters are also allowed so long as the doubles are notably different from one another (examples: MCU Peter Parker and Into the Spider-verse Peter Parker would be fine as they are two clearly different interpretations of the character. Alternatively, a canon version of a character and an AU version of the same character would be fine as long as the AU causes a notable difference in the character). Customizable protagonists and characters from canons with different story routes are allowed, and any characters with differing story routes would be considered AUs from one another.

The only requirement for a character is that they do require a consistent canon history. This is because many of the plot events and mechanics deal with memories and connections to their previous life (or current life if an OU). If you wish to app a mascot character that doesn't have a specific canon background (a vocalid, clippy, the trix rabbit, etc) - you are welcome to write an OC that's inspired by the character with a clear established background to work from. Characters who have multiple canon iterations (like Link from Legend of Zelda or Sonic the Hedgehog) will need to pick a single iteration to pull their canon background from. Characters must also have been properly introduced (not just a quick cameo) in their canon for at least one month at the time of apping.

How many characters can I play at a time?
You can play up to four active characters at a time! Only two of these characters are allowed to be Original Universe and there is a player cap of 25 OU players.

OU PLAYER SLOTS: 24/35 filled.

At the start of each month, we will make sure there are at least 2 OU player slots open whether it be through drops, or adding extra slots. But to keep from one cast from dominating the limited OU slots, there is a OU cast cap of 6 characters per cast. There's no cap on AUs from the canon at this time, just OUs!

Casts near Cap:
Final Fantasy XIV - 6/6, OUS CAPPED

How frequently can I submit an app?
There is no time restraint on the first two characters you app. If you join the game with the intent of playing two characters, you can app them both immediately or wait it out! However after you app your second character, you will require to wait one month between each new character app (so if you app your second character on March 2nd, you will need to wait until April 2nd to app a new character).

What type of characters can I play in this setting?
You have three options for characters!
  • Normal Modern AU: These characters have lived normal lives in a modern Earth setting, completely oblivious to anything strange up until their entry into the game. Anything in their backstory should be events that could reasonably happen in the real world. Upon acceptance, Normal AUs will be allowed to pick one free regain (canon regain or an elemental power) worth up to 3 points that will come into effect after they join the game.

  • Paranormal Modern AU: These are characters who have grown up in a modern Earth setting, but throughout their lives have experienced supernatural occurrences. These characters will get 3 extra points when they app to use for powers that the acquired at some point in their lives (if they so choose). Characters are also allowed to be apped as possessed status. Please refer to the FAQ for more information on that!

  • Original Universe Characters: Characters who hail from their original world and find themselves waking up in this world. These characters will not lose any memories, and are allowed to have any items that would reasonably be on their person when they arrive. They are allowed to retain one ability that's been weakened to beginner levels, otherwise they've been completely depowered.

Character Name: Edward Teach / Blackbeard
Canon: Our Flag Means Death + CRAU Sail
Canon History:
a wiki

For his CRAU, Ed briefly visited a cruise ship with ghosts, commanded by a Captain who continued to make the passengers' lives hell (or make them kill each other or otherwise die) in different scenarios. Stede created a sort of pirate crew, with Ed as co-captain, and managed to get a group of the misfits to band together under his questionable leadership. Ed was mostly there to hang out with Stede, as he saw the unfortunate displacement onto the ship as a sort of vacation away from his normal life of pirating, and because most of his sailory attempts to learn anything about the ship or their location were thwarted by magic.

He and Stede entered into a co-captains with benefits situation, ostensibly as an extension of their canon "I'll teach you things" partnership, but Ed naturally caught a case of Feelings for the man and doesn't really know how or if he should address it.

Canon Personality:

Ed wears multiple hats/faces/personas. As Blackbeard, he has to be a skilled, edgy, dark monster: a badass bad guy, but he also has to be cool and in command. He has to protect his crew, but also inspire fear and awe. Other times, Ed's the fun guy who wants to be the life of the party and liked and a bro. Or seen as sophisticated...-ish. Ed wants an equal sort of relationship. He hates being thought of as lesser for any reason, but most of this ties into classist or racist issues directed by the European colonial powers at the pirates.

Sometimes his anger rises and he lashes out (He thinks of himself as a monster, and a bad guy, but he also continues to do some of those terrible things. He's haunted by the memory of killing his own father, and refers to that side of himself as it were the sea monster The Kraken). And sometimes he proves himself to be very tender, kind, and thoughtful, if a bit caught up in his own way of things. Each emotion is reigned in at different times as he plays different roles around various people, shaping himself to how he wants to be perceived.

He's reached a point in his life where he's apparently bored with the way pirating has become too rinse-repeat for his liking, and he's captivated by the spark of uniqueness that Stede Bonnet brings to the scene. He wants excitement, adventure, something NEW.

It's clear he's fascinated by things (Stede's fancy clothes, his collection of stuff, him). He just doesn't necessarily show that around everywhere--but judging by Ed's own captain's cabin and his whimsical love of the finer things in life, he's a bit of a magpie and he has dreams of rising above what he was born into.

Among his many skills: Ed is a skilled sword fighter who frequently has been stabbed in the left-side gut and lived to tell the tale. He's also an excellent seaman and skilled sailor, including knowledge about navigation, weather and lunar phases (when he's got the right calendar date). Blackbeard has become the stuff of myth and legend. People who know the name fear and respect him without him having to do anything...which is kind of fucking BORING. But yeah. He's also proud to say he's earned it.

At some level, Ed's the cool bad-boy in school who really thinks the dorky new guy is pretty fascinating and kinda hot...

Anyway, he picks the name Jeff the Accountant for his fancy party persona and so I'm keeping Jeff as a name for his alternate self.

AU Name: Edward Teach, but also Jeff. ...He hasn't decided on a last name at this moment. I'm basically hoping to have him have to wing it in a thread.

AU Birthday: November 28 1975

AU History:

In the nature of Our Flag Means Death canon, we're not even going to try to explain away why Ed has a Kiwi accent. Just is and don't care.

Edward Teach, born on a beach. Well, more precisely, he was born in November 1975 in a west coast city something like 30-45 minutes driving time from the beach. It was a rough life, with too little money and not enough love. His mother tried, but his parents fought regularly, loudly and sometimes violently, and Eddie did what he could to be out of the house whenever possible.

First, after school hang-out in the auditorium, where the music teacher taught him piano in his spare time and Eddie befriended the cafeteria ladies. But the innocence of elementary school waned into the coming-of-age of middle and highschool, where Eddie was swept up into a loud and raucous bunch of kids who spent time smoking and drinking out back, bicycling around town, and starting trouble in whatever ways they could. Some of them ended up in juvenile detention--some in jail. By the grace of something, Eddie did not.

One of his cohorts had an uncle, Marco, who loved his cars and spent every afternoon working on the old Chevy that was his pride and joy. Marco, who was himself a plummer, valued trade-skills and thought the boys could benefit from learning real-world skills that could get them jobs later. He taught whichever boys were interested in how to work on a car, and how to drive. In this way, at least, Eddie had something almost like a father figure, finally, in his life.

Unfortunately, the skills took Eddie down a different path.

Marco wasn't the only person who thought Eddie's skills might be useful. A local chop shop found Eddie's skills VERY useful, and another of his buddies hooked him up with the right (wrong) people. Eddie was put to work breaking down stolen cars for other members to resell or smuggle over the border. Between tasks, he helped by recording bookkeeping data for the accountant who was usually too high or drunk to bother.

At some point, the associated gang was turned into the police by one of their own and the chop shop raided.

Somebody thought it was Eddie. Didn't matter that it wasn't, he couldn't prove it, especially not when his accuser was the man who had snitched.

It seems to be tradition that criminal organizations take the unwanted for long walks off short piers, for a swim with cement shoes--all the cliches of the mafia movies. Water hides bodies well, after all.

Eddie was barely 18.

He remembers the water was cold and dark and--

The being introduced itself as The Kraken when it first spoke to him, and has called itself by many names since: Davy Jones, Scylla, Charybdis, Leviathan... Ed, who has never considered himself religious, has come to think of it since as the Devil.

It made him an offer to live again.

Ed was barely 18.

He took the offer--how could he refuse?

And, so, then he was alive again, a marked man and marked by the Kraken.

The tattoo was kind of sweet, and wouldn't have been a problem if that's all it was--the twisting tentacle limb of some deep sea creature down his arm and across his chest and neck, as if it had him in a chokehold.

The water powers wouldn't have been so bad either, except that every splash, every draw of power from the sea required Eddie to spill his own blood.

But the call of the Kraken was louder in his head the closer he was to the ocean. It was enough to drown in, to drive a man insane. He didn't know what it wanted, only that it called to him.

Eddie knew well enough to know it was time to get out--so he got on a Greyhound and took it to wherever the next stop was. And that was how he continued, living like a nomad, paid under the table as a bouncer, or a line cook, or a piano player, he moved around wherever chance took him.

He had little use for the powers for himself, but on occasion not out of any great sense of charity or goodwill (perhaps more vigilantism), Ed found himself using them for others. The Kraken became a legend of a biker dressed in leather, more myth than reality, with the sea at his command. He would disappear before anyone could get close, and keep moving around directionless.

That's no life for a man approaching his 50s, though.

Which brings us to Jeff.

Ed hasn't been in Kaisou all that long, but long enough to establish himself a job as a part time chef and bookkeeper at a local pub. He calls himself "Jeff," a bespeckled, bearded man with wild salt-and-pepper hair, a dog he adores--Jeff is a man who is trying to keep his head down. For some reason the Kraken has dragged him here, and Ed intends to find out why.

AU Personality Differences:

Ed/Jeff is trying to keep his head down and keep a lower profile than Blackbeard would, which may impact his personality. He's also less of the rockstar than Blackbeard is, so he won't have the reputation that he's been coasting on for a while.

Jeff owns a dog, which Blackbeard canonically has forbade on his ship and forced crewmember Fang to kill his own. Ed/Jeff always wanted a dog, and his pitbull mix is his bff. He's even got the dog a sidecar for the motorcycle because hell yes. He's sort of tempted to adopt another one, too, maybe something a little smaller.

Jeff isn't as keen on death and maiming as Blackbeard, but that's because there's legal ramifications to that kind of behavior in the real world. Still, as the Kraken, Ed/Jeff might still be willing to stab a man through the eye...

Element: Water
Purchased Powers: 3pts: Create enough fog to cover a room. DRAMA. THEATRICS. FUCKERY.
Possession:
Possessed by the Kraken, or something that has called itself such in the past. I imagine it to be some primordial eldritch being that Ed hasn't ever actually seen. Maybe a Cthulhu, maybe a giant squid, or a sea serpent, maybe more like the Kraken that Perseus squared off with and turned to stone in the original Clash of the Titans. I'm not even gonna lie, on some level I probably was like "oh! he's a Warlock!" and then thought of Uk'otoa and ...yeah.

Contract Price and Possession Effects:
A tattoo: twisting tentacle limb of some deep sea creature down his arm and across his chest and neck, as if it had him in a chokehold, reminiscent of Ed's canon snake tatt.

Water Powers that require blood: every draw of power from the sea requires him to bleed. The more powerful the spell, the more blood required--everything from a pin prick, to ...run me through level.

Call of the Kraken: louder in his head the closer he is to the ocean. He doesn't know what it wanted, only that it called to him. Sort of a siren thing, but also sort of just a constant call of the sea.

Other Characters: Alec Hardy

Character Name: Stede Bonnet
Canon: Sail CRAU
Canon History: wiki

Stede was in a game called Sail which is horror-esque game. There he did suffer from ptsd type trauma of things he saw and witnessed, giving him a bit of a hair trigger fight response. He gathered a crew around him to make himself feel more like home and to help those that were lonely, but only felt lonelier and incompetent at the end of it because it felt sometimes like everyone was patronizing him. Still he did learn how to toughen up a little and gained some tattoos as well.

Canon Personality: Stede is incompetent but resilient and a bit cracked too. he is used to being the butt of the joke and having been bullied, but he doesn't let it stop him from trying to pursue his dreams of being a really cool pirate. For him piracy means freedom from the constraints of society and his marriage, it means a found family, it means a chance to be flamboyant and wave a sword around while being a snappy dresser. All flash and flow. While he does quail a bit at the bloodier side of things, he's determined to learn and make his own way. He's also an avid reader and a bit stuck in his own head and fantasies and while caring and compassionate sometimes can't see what's going on right under his nose.

AU Name: N/A
AU Birthday: 7/29

AU History: Stede was the only son of a family of hard-case criminal lawyers from the firm Bonnet & Bonnet. They were known for their ruthlessness and wealth. Stede spent his childhood with the solid expectation that he would join their ranks and was attempted to be groomed accordingly at a very strict boarding school that was also part of the family tradition to attend. Stede did not fair well there and came home more lily livered than ever.

He went to an even stricter High school and barely squeaked into the LSAT and barely squeaked into Harvard with a lot of his family’s money behind it. It was there he met Mary and courted her in order to do something right and to prove to his family he was worth something and wasn’t as gay as they thought. He even slept with her. This left them with an unintended consequence and they were pretty much pressured to marry- which they did.

Stede flunked out of Harvard and though his family still pretends he’s a lawyer for company and Stede even has his own office, he’s a disgrace. On his 39th birthday he was kidnapped by some people who wanted in on the Bonnet wealth. His father refused to pay him. The kidnappers felt so bad they let Stede go and Stede, who would rather not return to his old life, picked up stakes and went out into the wild blue yonder so to speak. With a new name and new identity.

He is freshly arrived in Kaisou, not as Stede Bonnet, but the Blue Phantom, a legendary biker who goes around helping the needy. Sort of like Batman. Except he can’t actually ride a motorcycle and he’s not very good at saving people. Still! He has a private bank account and a new life to lead and is more than ready to lead it.

AU Personality Differences: There's really not a lot of differences except his knowledge of modern tech. Stede doesn't usually deviate from the base of his personality

Character Name: Gwayne Bellveil
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV Warrior of Light Legacy OC
Canon Point: Buried Memory
Birthday: December 31st equivalent!
History: A Realm Reborn (and 1.0), and a very general overview of afterwards, but his personal history is outlined below!

Gwayne was born in a small town in Thanalan. His biological father was a traveler who stopped by and had some fun with his mother, but they'd been reckless. Not that they knew that until the man was long gone to another town. His mother never wanted a child and was considering her options once she'd started showing signs. She found out about a married couple, an Elezen man and a Hrothgar man, who wanted to adopt a child to add to their family. After speaking with them, she agreed to carry out the pregnancy and have them adopt the baby. To honor her, the couple asked if she'd be okay with the child having her surname, and she agreed.

A few years later, she left town without a word. Gwayne was too young at the time to understand her reasons for leaving, but he understood that his fathers were sad she had to go. He'd met her several times before, at least. However, she was still a stranger to him despite that.

Growing up, Gwayne was a gregarious child who loved to make new friends. It was in his teenage years that trouble started. He knew he was good-looking given how others his age were looking at him, and he didn't hesitate to use that to have some fun and experiment, as teenagers do. However, the adult gossips in town started to subtly circulate a rumor that Gwayne was going to be exactly like his biological father: a troublesome homewrecker. He ignored the rumor when it reached his ears, at least for a while.

He started a romantic relationship with one of his best friends, but they ultimately decided they were better off as friends and broke up amicably. Unfortunately, the next two he would enter into weren't so nice. Both were abusive in different ways, though Gwayne hadn't understood that at the time, but it was enough to change his view on relationships in general. After the last breakup, and an ill-timed comment about how he was just like his biological father, he decided to make those rumors right. He understood at that point that there was nothing he could do to make them change their mind. To his parents' disappointment, Gwayne started using his looks and charm to get into a relationship with someone, and then promptly breakup with them when he got bored.

When Gwayne was old enough, he followed his biological parents' footsteps and left town, though he at least told his fathers what he was planning to do and to write to them when he could. He journeyed to Ul'dah to start training as a gladiator and signed up with the Adventurer's Guild. By helping other people and seeing their hardships, the seeds of change were sown. Gwayne still slept around, of course, but he was starting to reconsider some of his views on the world. Not long after, he was awakened to the Echo and began to fall into step with the Scions.

The Battle of Carteneau was when everything changed for him. Gwayne hadn't hesitated to join the defense for Eorzea. He was injured in the early skirmishes, which was where he was reunited with his best friend (and ex) from home, Erin. She healed him, and during the healing gave him a rightfully deserved, blistering tongue-lashing for what he'd done back home. Much chastised, Gwayne truly gave her words thought, and agreed that he'd been a right asshole. Erin then gave him some advice, which he held to this day: "Stop pretending to be your father. He's not the one living your life. Find out who Gwayne is and really live."

Gwayne never saw her again after that.

He was saved from Bahamut's wrath by Hydaelyn transporting him away, and was deposited somewhere in Thanalan five years later. This event left him with a permanent mark between his shoulders, which he took as a sign to reflect and change his ways. Gwayne hitched a ride on a merchant's caravan heading to Ul'dah, and started his journey as the Warrior of Light in A Realm Reborn. The journey would turn out to be the best thing that happened to him, as it helped him to change and become the person he truly was.

Personality:

🌺 Gwayne is a very friendly and cheerful man who likes meeting new people.

🌺 Though very quiet during A Realm Reborn as he figured out who he was, by Endwalker he has grown into himself and has become much more talkative. It's not what it used to be, but he's improving in giving voice to his opinions, especially when he's asked.

🌺 He views being the Warrior of Light as a road to redemption for all the people he's hurt in the past. Despite all those accomplishments, Gwayne still feels that there's more work to do.

🌺 This man can definitely be extra and overdramatic.

🌺 He holds back on his personality a lot. One of the barbs that's stuck to him in his last relationship is that he's 'too much.' Gwayne can definitely be extra, but he tries to not be 'too much' to the point where he'll apologize about it.

🌺 Gwayne has changed greatly in his views on relationships. Whereas before he saw them as a means to an end, he's since realized that this is not true and has made deep, meaningful relationships with his friends in the Scions. He'll always be grateful and loyal to them because of this.

🌺 He loves his dads so much, but he still isn't sure about returning home to visit them. Given that going home means facing his past, he knows that he's simply not ready to face the music yet.

🌺 Speaking of dads, all Gwayne knows about his biological father is that he has his father's hair color. Since he has literally nothing else, he's made it a hard rule to never sleep with or date a white-haired Hyur, especially if they don't know their father. Just in case his father had more children, which is a distinct possibility.

Time of Arrival to Kaisou: December this year!
Items: Job stones (Paladin, Dark Knight, Reaper, White Mage, Dancer), Azem's crystal, Paladin armor, sword, shield
Retained Ability: Protection from Corruption - A gift from Hydaelyn that prevents his aether from being corrupted by outside forces.

Character Name: Scintilla Caminus
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV (WoL OC)
Canon Point: Post-6.2
Birthday: July 21st
History:

☉ Born to unknown parents, abandoned as a nameless orphan in Limsa Lominsa and grew up on the streets, stealing to survive and often leading fellow street kids in doing the same.

☉ Roughly around age ten, she was with a group of kids stealing a shipment of food, and caught because she stayed behind kicking sailors, Yellowjackets, and anyone else that happened to be nearby in the shins so the rest could get away cleanly.

☉ Amidst the general ruckus, she was picked up by a few members of the rogues' guild; rather than hand her over to the Maelstrom or the Yellowjackets, they ended up securing her a place with the blacksmiths' guild as a needed extra pair of hands.

☉ Named by the guild members; Scintilla Caminus being 'spark' and 'forge'.

☉ Spent the following several years running errands for the guild and learning her way around metalworking, becoming a full-fledged member in her own right.

☉ Approximately mid-20s as of the Seventh Umbral Calamity (the time period covered by the game is ambiguous at best), Scintilla spent most of the days leading up to Dalamud's fall hard at work with the guild supplying weaponry to the Eorzean Alliance as conflict intensified. noncombatant, she wasn't present at Carteneau, instead witnessing Bahamut's rampage from Limsa Lominsa.

☉ While picking up the pieces and rebuilding in the aftermath of the Calamity, she sought out the green-clad guardians that had left her with the blacksmiths' guild years before; finding them through a girl named V'kebbe that used to run in Scintilla's gang of fellow strays, she sought to learn to defend herself.

☉ Five years following the Calamity, she was sent to pick up supplies from the miners guild in Ul'dah. On her way back she shared travel accommodations with Alphinaud and Alisaie, and in a dream heard Hydaelyn's voice for the first time. Meeting Y'shtola a short time after, she was very quickly caught up in a whole mess and trying to keep up with the current while well out of her depth.

Heavensward

☉ Closing herself off even further (if at all possible) around the bloodline/nobility-focused Ishgardians due to feeling wildly out of place, Scintilla largely shuts down for most of the time spent in and around Coerthas and throws herself into work--that being 'end up intervening in a thousand-year war'. While not done fully out of obligation by any means, she spent a lot of time fighting to end the war for the sake of Ishgard's lower class with a low opinion of most of the nobility.
☉ This fully comes back to bite her following the death of her friends Haurchefant and later Ysayle, after both of which she resolves to eliminate the Heavens' Ward and later save Estinien from draconic possession at any and all cost to herself. The successful result of the latter becomes something she's quietly very proud of; a reminder that something can always be salvaged even in the worst of situations.

Stormblood
☉ If ever Scintilla was painfully aware she was fighting one or several wars not necessarily her own, it was right around now. Which isn't to say she lacked animosity for Garlemald itself, but getting caught up in the liberation of both Doma and Ala Mhigo was not her direct cause to champion so much as it was to support; not terribly different from the Dragonsong War, but feeling as though she had slightly less focus drawn to her specifically was a relief of sorts even while she was on the direct front lines of the conflict.
☉ ...At which point Zenos happened and swiftly made himself her direct problem and her his specific focus, both of which she could gladly have done without. Having an enemy she couldn't overcome with brute force was a new experience, and one she didn't exactly care for.

Shadowbringers

☉ While not possessed of an abundance of wisdom, she had common sense enough to be aware the Exarch was not the most honest about his identity as well as having a solid guess over who he actually was, though she kept as much to herself rather than risk damaging some plan she expected was going on. (The fact that this plan was both to her and G'raha's general detriment was not exactly something she expected.)
☉ Dealing with and learning about Emet-Selch was complicated, at best. Accepting that the perpetually villainous Ascians had their own cause to fight for had already gone without saying, but knowing it was essentially the restoration of their own world at the cost of reality as it was now known was a troubling truth to contend with.
☉ Even with her friendship with the Scions warmer than it had been at first, her first real confidant was Ardbert; the mostly-dead specter she would later learn was a shard of her own soul. They spoke at length with her the only one able to hear his voice, and at a time of dire need he rejoined with her and vanished to give Scintilla the power to save the First.
☉ Later facing off against Elidibus with both the respective Warrior of Light struggling to save their worlds, she solidified her resolve to protect the current world rather than allow it to be brought to an end in favor of the ancient world Elidibus and the others fought to resurrect. Recognizing they were essentially fighting for the same mutually exclusive cause, she held no hatred or resentment for him; giving over the other Convocation members' memory crystals and letting them vanish with the last of the unsundered Ascians upon his defeat.

Endwalker
this is already long enough here's the breakdown through 6.0
☉ Following a brief period of genuine peace and quiet, she returned to Thavnair on ostensibly a treasure hunt that led to investigating the world's thirteenth shard, overrun by darkness and known as the Void. Seeking to rescue Vrtra's sister Azdaja, she goes along with Estinien, Y'shtola, Vrtra, and a voidsent called Zero to explore the Thirteenth and defeat the Four Fiends led by a voidsent called Golbez because we're just doing FF4 now apparently.

Personality:

☉ Very rarely speaks at any length; when she does speak up her wording is very carefully chosen and with the deliberate air of someone concealing an accent and borrowed terms/phrases heard from people like Y'shtola or Alphinaud. More often she'll contribute in nods or gestures, leaving the others to formulate plans that she follows through on. This persists up until Endwalker, but even then she'll mostly defer to the others before speaking up herself.

☉ Her real speaking voice is extremely coarse in structure and heavily Lominsan accented; the only usual tell of it is tripping over syllables when in a hurry. (ex. "Estinien" becomes "'stinyen", "Hydaelyn" becomes "Hyd'lyn", "Urianger" becomes "[unintelligible]")

☉ Actively avoids telling anyone much about her past for fear of damaging the image of 'the Warrior of Light/Darkness'. The only people who know are the ones she can't keep it secret from; the blacksmith and rogues' guilds. She nearly came clean with Lyse after the 'Yda' persona was dropped, but backed off at the last minute. As time goes on and she trusts her companions a little more, she's more willing to admit to where she's come from provided she knows it'll be kept quiet.

☉ Very open and friendly despite the prior point; able to befriend most people quickly whether through a willingness to do fetch quests for them or just by being herself. Though she's had doubts over whether her friends value her as much or more as what she can do for them, she'll gladly live and work alongside them without hesitation. This self-doubt lessens significantly over time, effectively disappearing altogether around most people by the time of mid/late Endwalker. Has a strong sense of morals and camaraderie, following the ironclad rules of a rogue: never steal from one's comrades, never fail to stick up for the defenseless, and never be afraid to fight a little dirty.

☉ Extremely lacking in academic knowledge or general booksmarts, Scintilla is extremely low WIS high INT; her street smarts and common sense are sharp as a tack, but she tunes out immediately when the conversation turns to anything scholarly or technobabble-focused. When it's necessary for her to understand something (usually so she can kill a given problem) such as the circle of aetherial elements, she needs it put in straightforward and clear terms. However, she has incredibly sharp reflexes in and out of battle while also a genius at crafting with her hands, and is often quick to catch on when someone's trying to lie to her.

☉ Harbors a strong sense of justice, in the sense of believing that the world at large is naturally unfair and the concept of 'justice' exists only as enforced by people willing to stand and fight for it. Painfully aware of the difficulty inherent in that concept following conflicts with Emet-Selch and Elidibus, but if anything both situations have only made her more resolved to follow through on protecting the current world(s) while making sure to remember the ancient one.

☉ Not incredibly skilled at manipulating aether to the extent that Y'shtola or the others do; after bringing the Scions back to the Source, she asked Alisaie to help her find X'rhun Tia and worked incredibly hard to learn red magic, believing the fusion of physical and magical combat was the only path she could take in order to continue to get stronger. She uses aether-infused ink on both arms to help her control her spellcasting.

AU Name: Jonathan Crane
AU Birthday: October 20th 1973

AU History:

[Backstory has full permission of Harley’s player and was discussed in Plurk]

Jonathan Crane was born to Karen and Gerald Crane in New York. He knows little about their lives or whether he was cherished or detested. Gerald abandoned his family at birth, following which his mother struggled with motherhood and palmed him off on his grandmother: a socialite who resided in a historic townhouse in Brooklyn.

The relationship between Marion and Jonathan was extremely grim. She impressed her peers as kind and loving by adopting him, but in truth she was a sadist who locked him inside his room and withheld food and water. He was moulded and shaped by her lie that his parents had died when he was a child. He became an accessory to her reputable image; an object stripped of rights who was punished for expressing his identity. She dominated his public and private life, deciding everything from appearance to education. Outstanding grades drew admiration from her peers but became an excuse to humiliate and belittle his pride. He became the family scapegoat, the reason for their disgrace, unloved and abandoned because nobody could love a cursed child.

Years passed as Jonathan was paraded around her friends for entertainment but denied his own companions and isolated from society. By her hand he grew gentle and fair; distinguished by sharp features and striking blue eyes. Marion supported public recognition of his beauty but ridiculed him behind closed doors. She scorned his elegance and branded him the devil’s child; an untrustworthy snake like his father. Meanwhile, elderly ladies cooed over him at prayer, prompting her to usher him home where he was accused of being a demon who leads good people astray. She cursed him to be unable to act without permission so she could keep a watchful eye on him. Though she acted with her own hand, she claimed she did nothing except see the wickedness in his soul and believe God would punish him.

Life as a teenager was rough. Jonathan endured starvation and tended the garden without refreshment or shelter from the midday sun. The heat was overpowering and he was forced to watch Marion shelter beneath her summer hat and parasol. Fear forced him into digging on his knees and when he sported patches on his trousers she made him the subject of her own private joke and labelled him a scarecrow. She denied him permission to drink and he could only sate his thirst by enduring pain to turn a tap. This contrasted against her depriving him of warmth and shelter in later months. Punishment for disobedience was severe and what he feared was to be locked outside at the height of winter. She would deny him the privilege of appropriate clothing and remove her permission to come inside.

Marion would soon lock him outside during a bitter winter and deny him permission to leave the grounds, resorting to a physical demonstration of power. Jonathan was driven to wander in his nightclothes in order to seek shelter from the storm. The curse grew unbearable with each step. It took him no time at all to bed down in an alley and end up at death’s door. Muscles refusing to work. Limbs covered in blisters. Skin turning blue. Eyes closing as they lost vision, lungs struggling to breathe. He fought to survive and soon let something in; a spirit that would save his life for a simple price. Now possessed, he climbed to his feet and stumbled back towards home and pretended he never left.

Marion never loosened his leash in order to maintain face with her housekeeper; a woman called Sharon Quinzel whom she discreetly hired. Her friends praised her for supporting this woman who needed all the help she could get. The Quinzels became a psychological weapon to attack any comfort Jonathan might possess in others and to further isolate him from society. She gently wielded her authority with a gloved fist, threatening to throw both in jail for generations should they inform anyone what happens inside her house. Not that Sharon or Nick cared too much, viewing children as little more than a nuisance.

Months ticked on. Days dragged by. Jonathan struggled to balance his fear against what the spirit had demanded. He kept its presence a secret and ignored his condition. He retreated into his own thoughts to recover and continued earning grades. It crossed his mind that he was breaking rules as days returned to a strange normalcy. Like the snake in the garden, his new friend had tempted him with knowledge. Now it proved a patient sort and waited.

Jonathan survived the next couple of years. He learned how to be manipulative and pragmatic, masking himself with the exterior of a calm introvert. Sharon would bring her baby to work in a blatantly manipulative manner and flatter him to earn Marion’s favour. Nick called around to mooch ten dollars here and there. Their misunderstanding of social cues suggested life was a game. Never had he designed the rules or controlled the hand he was dealt. How absurd it was he had never known and how exciting it was to know. His mind overflowed with curiosity and his heart grew impulsive. One day he vanished into Marion’s study and unearthed everything; wills, notes and deeds. It was a bitter lesson but he learned the truth about her lie and from that moment there were consequences. Life had changed. Now he stepped up to play the game.

In his sophomore year of high school, Jonathan ignored how Marion had held him back when his teachers noted his intelligence and favoured skipping grades. He graduated as valedictorian and manipulated her narcissistic need for validation. It proved simple to influence her peers into suggesting she enrol him in a prestigious university to study medicine and psychiatry. He delighted in preparing everything for his journey and once departed never looked back.

Encouraged to shine, Jonathan became the star of his class; mentored and nurtured with gifts and friendship by a professor who recognised his intelligence. His appearance attracted peers like moths to a flame but their attention triggered a bitterness that led him to reject friendship and affection. He debated his mentor about human motivation and found enjoyment in regular games of chess. He was drawn into conversation and encouraged to trust others; to see human beings as better and more complex emotionally than what he believed. He was counselled to be less emotionally isolated and cold.

During his undergraduate, he volunteered for work in university laboratories and shadowed additional lectures. He struggled to accept new ideas that contradicted his early experiences and came to believe his mentor, until now a useful supply of friendship, was foolish for downplaying the power of fear and control. He nurtured the seed of thought that his guide was gullible; a disappointment whose head was stuffed with the same nonsense as everyone else. They continued meeting but he withdrew once more, falling victim to old thoughts and obsessions as he focused on his course. He finished his Psychology BA in five years and began studying his MD/PhD.

Jonathan undertook years of intensive PhD research, specialising in psychopharmacology. Clinical training filled the remainder of his years with residency required on the completion of study. He specialised in forensic psychiatry and during his internship began to form the idea of using patients in his experiments. His dissertation committee called his thesis brilliant and groundbreaking, feeding his intellectual ego. He graduated and was immediately hired by the university. They ensconced him in their psychiatry department where many, including his mentor, predicted he would have a long and distinguished career.

Before the next academic year, Jonathan would schedule an appointment with Marion for coffee and conversation. He disregarded her as she twisted her actions towards him over the years, claiming her methods made him a success. Words flowed back and forth until he apologised for obliging her to make excuses. Her lessons had been sound. The only problem was her method; her falsification of data and misinterpretation of results. He remarked amicably on her tendency to misplace notes and advised treatment for her symptoms. Ignoring her objections, he sipped coffee before supposing her doctor had prescribed it already. He then lounged back and watched her suffocate without uttering a word.

Jonathan returned to work and approached his class in methodical fashion; withholding approval while reminding students they were here to learn. He established high standards by punishing mistakes and correcting poor behaviour. His reserved manner enhanced his mystique; a display of smoke and mirrors woven from his reluctance to speak about himself. Colleagues sought his opinions and treated him with courtesy and kindness. Jonathan viewed their benevolence as transactional. He attended work gatherings but found solace in his research.

This included the development of beneficial treatments for schizophrenia. Jonathan assured review boards with his reputation and led graduates in exploring patient responses to cutting edge medication. He rejected ethical standards and treated his subjects as tools requiring maintenance and care. Some he manipulated into consent and others he forwarded into withdrawal; even those experiencing delusions that should have seen them disqualified. More were permitted to relapse in order to assess their symptoms. Families were uninformed as their loved ones were abused by research that placed scientific advancement over compassionate treatment.

By spearheading research and serving the university, Jonathan received tenure a few months before turning forty. The promotion enabled him to voice professional opinions without fear and to dedicate additional time to teaching and research. He experimented on a greater scale and published his research - and became a subject of curiosity. The professor who had nursed his development witnessed his experiments and reported his behaviour to the board. Jonathan retreated into emotional indifference during their altercations, staring impassively as his mentor recognised patterns of abuse and neglect. He simply chuckled and admitted everyone finds life hard sometimes. There was no need to make life difficult, he advised. The implicit threat cowed his mentor into defending his reputation. His complaint was later dismissed as disturbing and outlandish fantasy.

Jonathan refused to abandon his new source of entertainment and antagonised their relationship for revenge and personal amusement. He hunted his mentor in person and online, abusing the necessity of corresponding about work. Their little games never bored him to tears but outside of work he struggled to provoke a response. Highs became lows. He lost his source of attention and struggled against his inclination to isolate himself from his peers. This forced him to look towards students of yesteryear. He found Harleen in Kaisou and leveraged his experience and reputation to secure a full professorship at her local university. He resigned without regret, his alma mater distributing a press release stating he was reluctantly leaving his post to pursue other opportunities.

AU Personality Differences:

Minimal. Crane presents similarly to the start of Batman Begins. The influence of his Scarecrow persona is tenuous and without his mask he is less beholden to aggression and impulsivity. He retains his lack of empathy and sadism and speaks disarmingly to disarm and manipulate. His responses are more curtailed and he functions better in society.

The influence of his alter ego is something I intend to explore through memory flashbacks together with the pressure of his possession. Should his mask appear in Kaisou one day? Well, that would be fascinating.

Element: Water
Purchased Powers:

General: Medium level regeneration | 2 points
Water: Body runs at a lower temperature | 1 point

Possession:

The malevolent spirit inhabiting his body following his close experience with death is the Scarecrow, an archetypical being birthed from the collective unconscious. He represents the hidden and repressed side of the psyche and all a person refuses to become. Jonathan feels like he understands him intimately and welcomes him as his old friend. He is encouraged to sink into his depths, towards hidden desires and impulses that will lead him towards his potential.

In the past, the barrier preventing him realising it was his grandmother. The contract price for saving his life was to kill her. This impulse was present in his unconscious but until he acknowledged his desires it was impossible to realise. That is why the spirit’s demand can be described as an irresistible impulse. Jonathan has to follow those desires and emotions he refuses to acknowledge. If his instincts drive him to retaliate he must answer them. He has not learned how this may be accomplished because until now he has retaliated against his tormentors. The fact he regards his upbringing as normal makes it hard to acknowledge his mental health was affected. This is why the charge for ignoring them is to lose his grip on his sanity. Crows will follow him around but remain unseen by others. His voice will whisper in his ear and tell him to do something. These hallucinations may trigger anxiety or provoke restless agitation. Intrusive thoughts possibly developing into obsessions that leave him delirious without realising the cause.

Character Name: Nick Verghese
Canon: Original Character

Canon History: Here!

Canon Personality:
  • Often comes off as overly serious, due to his dedication to his job and general cynicism about the state of the world. However, he also has a very dry and sarcastic sense of humor that doesn’t immediately get picked up on by others.
  • Easily annoyed and generally grumpy. Self explanatory.
  • A very curious/inquisitive person. Finds it very hard to leave questions without finding an answer to them. Gets easily annoyed when he can’t find the information he’s looking for. Unfortunately, this leads to him being somewhat obsessive over certain cases.
  • Hardworking and determined--and stubborn. There is little that can stand in his way when he wants something, and it takes a lot for him to be talked down from pursuing his goals.
  • Resourceful. Nick tends to make the most of a bad situation and use what’s on hand to try and get out of it. His methods tend to be pretty practical and grounded.
  • Wary of others. Nick finds it difficult to trust other people, and tends to keep to himself. Additionally, he rarely leaps into a situation without at least thinking things through.
  • Though Nick considers himself to be cautious and analytical, this is only true to a certain point. His obsession with discovering the truth behind Casey’s death has resulted in him becoming far more reckless. Usually, these snap decisions result in poor consequences for himself and others.
  • Empathetic, to a fault. Wants to help other people, but is usually afraid of hurting them in the process. This also sort of feeds into his obsessiveness when he’s trying to solve other people’s problems.
AU Name: N/A
AU Birthday: January 2nd

AU History:
His AU history is mostly the same as his normal history, with a few key points of difference:

  • Nick never meets Artemis at all in this world. Instead, he was saved from death by an entity that possessed him–Charon, the ferryman of the underworld. Thus, Nick dives into the paranormal world a few years earlier than his normal history.
  • Because of this possession, Nick has readily shifted from working as a normal private investigator to working as a paranormal investigator. Probably been working like this for a few years?
  • He’s still trying to find out what happened to Casey and how he died, but he keeps being sidetracked trying to solve other people’s problems.
AU Personality Differences: No significant personality differences!

Purchased Powers:
🎲 Slightly improbable misfortune. This will affect gacha results and give a -1 to all side quest rolls. (1 point)
🔍 Detect if something/someone is magic and general information on element-type and strength. (2 points)

Possession:
After Casey died and Nick nearly died, Nick was saved by Charon, the ferryman of the underworld. Charon ferries souls between realms and was like, hey, if you help me do my job, I won’t drag you to the spirit realm just yet, ‘kay?

So, Nick’s contract price is the need to exorcize spirits. Every few days, Nick is required to seek out an echo/ghost/spirit monster and banish it back to the spirit realm. The longer he waits, the more disoriented/scattered he becomes, making it incredibly difficult to focus and tends to result in him dissociating for hours or days at a time. If he waits too long, he’ll need to rely on other people to help him complete his contract prices, much to his chagrin.

The more powerful the spirit is, the more time he can buy for himself before he has to reap again. For example, exorcizing a bunch of echoes might only give him a few days until he has to do it again, while banishing an extremely powerful spirit monster might give him a few weeks of relief. How nice!

AU Name: James Alexander ‘Jamie’ Carter
AU Birthday: July 31, 2003

AU History: James Alexander Carter, or Jamie for short, was born to a loving couple in Kaisou: his mom, an English high school teacher, struggled with infertility before she and his dad, a pediatrician, got lucky in having him after trying and praying for a child for so long. Realizing that they may not have more kids in the future and acknowledging that there are many displaced children who deserve a loving home, they decided to adopt three more kids, all younger than him, so he wouldn’t feel lonely at home. Having loving parents who look after him and siblings who look up to him showers him in so much love and gives him a stable life. With his mom’s teaching background, he learns to love reading and writing at a young age: he would read almost every book he could get his hands and get lost in various worlds. With his dad’s past as a swimmer, he got into swimming very early in his toddler years, making him feel one with the waters that he wants to swim competitively at school. Reading plenty of newspapers with dad every morning soon gives him an idea to become a journalist himself: he wants to find what lead to many things happening in the world and report on the latest news.

When he was five years old, Jamie was reading old books in the city library during the winter when he feels something weird, the feeling of being drawn to the supernatural rumored to be felt within the city and sensing the presence of spirits lurking within the library. Jamie was a little weirded out by the thought of feeling the presence of spirits and he did try not to think too much about it until he got out of the library and he is shocked to discover that he can tolerate the cold without a coat (he forgot to put it on while running out to the library entrance) to some degree. Then it gets super weirder while he was washing dishes after dinner that he notices the water in the sink moving by the movement of his hands. It scares him for life that he really didn’t want to discuss about his supernatural experiences to anyone publicly, not to mention that he has been trying to hide his water magic for a long time. He also excels very well in school: being in the swimming team, getting above average grades (with History and English being his best and Chemistry his worst), writing for the school paper, and being the member of the book club. At the moment, Jamie is a second year college student studying Major in Journalism and Minor in Creative Writing at Kaisou University. In addition, he works hard as the captain of the mens swim team, a news writer for the university’s newspaper, and a part time cafe barista.

AU Personality Differences:
  • No prophecy = No Chosen One. Jamie is not saddled with Chosen One burdens and the fate of the world is not on his shoulders compared to what Harry had gone through. This allows him to pursue his dreams and hobbies much early on and live life his own way.
  • Jamie is raised in a loving home and by a family who absolutely loves him dearly unlike the Dursleys. He doesn’t feel like he is useless in the family and truly enjoys the time he spends with them.
  • Being the eldest of four kids means a lot of responsibilities and Jamie sometimes feels pressured to set an example for his adopted siblings to live by. That means more stress and more headaches for him in this world. Juggling plenty of things in his student life is just another avenue for stress for him.
  • Unlike Harry happily accepting magic, Jamie thinks having magic is like a curse. When you start to see weird stuff happening and having water magic at an early age, you have a lot to fear of being called a freak for life. He will not try to say much about the supernatural and his experiences with it unless you get to know him more.
  • He has more confidence in himself due to the support from his family and friends. That allows him to display his ambition to be a journalist more compared to Harry’s unassuming outward persona concealing his ambitions and goals, making Jamie leaning towards Slytherin more than his old self.
  • He is more hardworking in order to achieve his dreams thanks in part of his parents instilling a drive to work it to earn it in him and his siblings. This is something Harry seems to hide publicly often in canon.
  • Because of the need to be a good example for his siblings and not having to deal with plenty of terrible people, Jamie is not as snarky as Harry would be. He doesn’t want to risk snarking so much that it would sully his reputation.
  • Jamie is more social than his old self, due to being raised in a more loving and warm environment and working to get a job that requires him to talk with people to get news.

  • Element: Water
Purchased Powers: Low level water manipulation (2), Withstand temperatures as cold as 32F (0*C) without a coat (1)
