Character Name: Lucy Westenra

Canon History: Her very own Wikipedia article!

Canon Personality:
VIVACIOUS. One of the first things we see about Lucy in the novel is just how lively she is, as a person. She teases her best and closest friend Mina Murray over letters and talks happily to her about the three (THREE) proposals that she got in one day, and her initial letters show a person who is full of irrepressible charm and emotion—she cries over having to reject two of the men, and her tone when she speaks to Mina comes off as playful and cheery. She's charming enough to get the attentions of everyone she speaks to, with strangers who've never met her being drawn to and charmed by her, and even when she rejects two of her suitors she's still very friendly toward them, considering them close friends.

KIND. Lucy is so very, very kind, to most people around her. She hates the idea of breaking the hearts of two of her suitors, and indeed wishes that she could be allowed to marry all three of them in order to avoid all that heartbreak, as while she loves one of them, she doesn't want to cause pain to the others. She chastises an old, raucous fellow named Mr. Swales for speaking ill and lightly of a dead man, and Mina notes that she is "so sweet and sensitive that she feels influences more acutely than other people do." Even when she herself is in pain, she tries to insist on putting others first before herself—she tries to get Mina to take her shoes back even though Lucy herself is in little more than a shift and Mina's slippers against a cold English night, and when she's ill, she forces herself to cheer up because she doesn't want to hurt her fiancé Arthur with the sight of her.

SELF-SACRIFICING. Lucy is a modest young woman, and hates putting her problems in other people's laps. Even when she's slowly dying because of a vampire bite, she still tries, to the best of her abilities, to be a good hostess to her ex-suitor Jack Seward's mentor, Dr. Van Helsing, and does not want to worry her mother too much, keeping up her cheery demeanor and only dropping it when she feels that she can speak honestly to someone. She's sweetly charming and properly polite to everyone, but she keeps her worries and her troubles close to her chest because she doesn't want her loved ones to feel pain that she might cause them. It's upsetting to her when she thinks that she's hurt someone's feelings, and she'll do what she can to avoid this.

PROPER. Compared to her friend Mina Murray, Lucy is a proper Victorian lady, with her chief concern being how she comes off to other people. Part of this is her general demureness, where she hides her real feelings and worries behind a mask of cheer when she feels she must, but another part of this is simply the times in which she came of age—in her day and age, women traditionally were expected to focus on homemaking and on securing their lives via marrying someone, and to be demure and pure, so she's watchful of her speech to others in a way she's not in her private diary entries, what few of them we get. One of the few times she drops this proper demeanor is when she talks to Jack Seward about her medical troubles—even then, Seward has to tell her that Arthur is very anxious about her health, and she assents to Seward telling Arthur all that's happening with her. She's also aware of how other people ought to act in accordance to propriety, and scolds Mr. Swales for his frank and rude way of telling her about the man whose gravestone she finds herself accidentally sitting on.

REPRESSED. I don't mean sexually repressed like every other goddamn Dracula adaptation seems to think, she's repressed in the sense that for all her life, she's had a pretty good idea of what the life she'll live will look like, and while she's accepted it for the most part, there are moments where she seems a little less than satisfied. The most obvious note for this is that she doesn't want to reject her other two suitors and wishes she could marry all three of them, but she also represses her worries and terrors for the sake of other people whenever she can. She has bad dreams and is deeply afraid for her life, cannot sleep and can barely breathe sometimes, but at least in the earlier days of her illness is not keen on letting on how bad a state she's in. It's only when she's unable to hide it that she does show it, and seems quite relieved to be able to tell her worries to someone she trusts.

AU Name: Lucy West
AU Age: 25 (canon age: 19)
AU Birthday: September 22 (canon says her birthday is sometime in September, but the exact date is not said.)

AU History:
  • Lucy West was born into a middle-class family who loved her very deeply and, by all accounts, had a fairly normal life. She went to community college and graduated with a degree in TV production, then went to work in Hollywood. She got to work on a movie about a vampire in the Victorian age stalking a ship and the crew desperately trying to figure out who was killing everyone onboard one by one.

  • And then she met an actual vampire, who saw her as easy prey and stalked her for weeks to try and get her alone. He got more than he bargained for, however, when she managed to fight him off and stabbed him in the neck with her keys before running away. It was in her apartment, lost and confused and terrified beyond belief, that the turn started, as did the return of Lucy Westenra's memories. The most terrifying memory was her past self's slow death at the hands of Dracula, and Lucy knew, with a bone-deep terror, that she could not, would not die that way. She didn't want to hurt anyone. She wanted so badly to live.

  • Completely terrified of becoming a vampire like her past self did, and on the verge of dying alone, Lucy made a desperate bargain with something she still doesn't understand. (It's a demon.) It revived her, but now she was cursed with a different thing altogether: a dark thing that would drive her to leave a job she loved, the family she adored, and a town she was happy with in due time, and exact a price for her continued survival: a drop of blood onto a ritual dagger, or else. So far Lucy's been able to stave it off by using her own blood, but she can tell the demon is beginning to want more than she can give.

  • She comes to Kaisou when she learns of how spiritually sensitive it is, and moves there in order to look into ways to get out of her possession and stay alive. The demon has told her that if she casts it out, the turn will complete and she'll become a vampire, and begin to feed off innocents like poor dead Lucy Westenra before her. She's not sure yet if the demon's telling the truth, but she's not taking any chances.

  • AU Personality Differences:

ASSERTIVE. In sharp contrast to her Victorian-era self, Lucy's a far more assertive and outgoing person, coming off as a charming go-getter type who livens up any party she's at. As she's now come of age in a time when women enjoyed significantly more freedom and rights, she's more likely to just...chat up strangers and speak her opinions. She does still repress her feelings to some degree, preferring to keep up a cheery demeanor and not dump her problems on somebody else.

POSITIVE THINKER. In place of Lucy's Victorian-era propriety, modern-day Lucy West is big on positive thinking to the point where it's getting a little bit toxic for her. She hates making other people sad and bringing the mood down, and will do whatever she can to ensure that everyone around her is happy and well. If that means pushing her own problems to the side, so be it, she's good at doing that, she can handle herself and her own shit.

KNOWLEDGEABLE. Unlike her past self, she knows enough vampire lore (thank you pop culture), and supernatural lore in general since coming to Kaisou, to at least be able to protect herself from any malignant influences. Well, more malignant influences than she's already got, at any rate. Her current possession has driven her to take a more active role in trying to expel the demon and keep herself fully alive—with knowledge comes the terror of becoming a vampire like the Bloofer Lady, the undead monster her past self turned into.

    Element: Fire!
    Purchased Powers:
Conjure Fire - Medium, 2 pts.
    Anger Fire - 2 pts.
Heat Resistance - Low, 1 pt.
    Healing - Low, 1 pt.

Possession: Lucy is currently possessed by a demon of some kind that gave her fire powers and has told her that it's the only thing keeping her from dying and turning into a vampire. She isn't sure how true that is. Her contract price is to draw blood out via a specially-marked ritual dagger that she must keep on her person at all times. So far she's managed to keep the demon sated by drawing her own blood, but it's lately been making noises about wanting more than she can offer, something she can't allow.
