AU Name: Sorey Shepard // Dr. Rosewood
AU Birthday: November 24th
Faction: POKEGO

AU History: He was born Slade Shepard to a Japanese mother and British father in London, England. It was a pretty happy childhood. He went to school, made friends, got a little bullied.... His father got him into Arthurian legends, and he fell in love with history and mythology. An early dream of Slade's was to become a history professor or even an archaeologist, since exploring ruins sounded like fun. Such a dream was mostly crushed by kids he considered his friends, who truthfully weren't the best people he could've hung out with at the time. They were the kind of friends who took advantage of his kindness and big heart to fill a void in their own lives, which ended up burning Slade out by the time he reached high school. Their disinterest in history killed his passion to pursue it as a career, and so he felt a bit lost.

It was when Slade was 17 that his life took a drastic turn from normal into strange. On vacation with his family, they joined a program that would allow them to rappel down the side of an old castle. Slade, naturally, was extremely excited by the prospect. Right as he was lowering himself into position, something in the mechanism snapped. He fell and the strangest thing happened: a flashback to a memory in which he—but also not Slade—fell into darkness with a boy his age. He didn't get much more than that, as he was knocked unconscious. When Slade came to, he was in a hospital with a few broken bones. Fortunately, he was able to make a mostly full recovery with the metal fixtures removed. Unfortunately, due to the severity of the fracture in his left arm, those fixtures would permanently remain in the bone. Slade was simply grateful that he came out of it was well as he did, and that his dominant hand had been spared the brunt of the damage.

For a long time, he had a fear of heights. His parents, bless them, suggested therapy and he agreed to try it out. Slade then became interested in psychology as his sessions progressed, and his therapist suggested taking some courses in psychology, encouraging him to pursue it as a field of study after high school. The only thing he kept from her was how he would sometimes flashback to a memory that was his, yet not his at the same time. It was strange and confusing, but he didn't want to get locked away in a psychiatric hospital.

On his way home from school one day, Slade was approached by someone. Their appearance, even their voice, was something he would never be able to remember. However, one thing was clear: they were interested in recruiting him to something called The Black Order. They said Slade was remembering his past life, and that he could make a difference if he joined them after graduation. He wasn't comfortable with it, especially with how pushy they were, and he wasn't sure what to do for a few months after the incident. Then, there was an invitation in the mail waiting for him. An organization called POKEGO wanted to invite him to join their organization in one of their research units. Slade gave it some thought over the summer, but it was another Order member trying to coerce him into joining their organization that really made the decision for him. POKEGO sounded like an organization that would allow him to leave if he needed or wanted to later. The Black Order didn't. Slade sent his acceptance to POKEGO, requesting to be able to join their psychology unit while he went to university for the subject.

After graduating high school, he got tired of living 18 years with people confusing his name with "Slate," and filed a legal name change to "Sorey." In his opinion, it was a lot better having "sorry" jokes than it was being compared to a piece of rock for the rest of his life. His family pretty much became the only ones who continued to call him by his birth name, and he was happy with that. That said, the next eight years were dedicated to gaining his Psychology Doctorate so that he could become a clinical psychologist. During that time, as part of his studies, he worked with more experienced psychologists in POKEGO to get on-the-job experience, as well as aid in the research efforts. While working with the Spirit Realms, Sorey began to show an affinity towards Wind magic, though it seemed like his ability to use lightning was where he really shined.

During his time at POKEGO, he came to make friends and looked up to some of his fellow researchers from other cohorts. Professor Willow was one such person Sorey looked up to. He admired Willow's dedication to his research. That almost landed him into trouble, as it turned out. After earning his BA, Sorey was scouted to see if he was interested in doing more than just researching Spirit Realms. They wanted to see if he was perhaps interested in joining a restoration project. Sorey tried to get more information about it before saying yes or no, but his colleague was cagey and avoidant of the details. Something about it didn't feel right, so he declined. Though, he noticed that since declining, no small part of his colleagues within his cohort distanced themselves from him to a degree. Sorey didn't know what to think of it, but there was no more talk of restoration after that, so he left it alone.

Nothing happened for four years after that. Sorey graduated with a Psychology Doctorate, and was looking forward to getting more job experience so that he could open up his own practice someday. He was on a much-needed vacation with his family—mostly his parents and grandparents—when Professor Willow enacted his plan to imprison a god. When the news reached Sorey, it was... honestly, it was devastating. That news became even more tragic when he saw how few of his cohort hadn't participated. It was a very small cohort to begin with, but almost all of them had joined Willow's side. Some had died in the chaos and in-fighting, but some were still alive and were facing punishment for their actions.

At some point after things had relatively calmed down, Sorey was assigned to Kaisou to aid a colleague in mending the organization's relationship with the residents there. They felt that his general temperament and work ethic would help improve their image. He took the assignment gladly. Even if he hadn't personally been involved in what had happened, he still felt responsible as a member of POKEGO. Perhaps this was the best way Sorey could atone for his cohort's involvement. Fortunately, his grandparents lived in Kaisou and were willing to take him in until he found a job and made enough to get housing on his own.

AU Personality Differences: 🧭 That obsession with history and ruins and all that? It amounted to nothing more than a hobby. He didn't have the passion to make a career out of it, but there's still a lot of hyperfocusing on HISTORY and RUINS.

🧭 Still believes the best in people, but he's a little more cautious and a lot more aware of how much he can realistically handle emotionally.

🧭 Holy hell is this a tired man. Yet, somehow, he remains cheerful and positive. They're just tempered by time and probably loneliness.

🧭 We do not talk about the loneliness.

🧭 Sorey very much wants to find a way to restore his home world. Not for himself, but for the people of his past life. He feels he owes it to them now that he's slowly remembering that world.

🧭 Reading books, working out, and watching Disney movies are absolutely coping mechanisms.

🧭 After all the shadiness he's been dealing with in this life, he's gotten a lot wiser about something not being quite right.
