Vash and Varian seem more like the Odd Couple at first, but it's soon clear that they work really well as a team. Between Varian's alchemical qualifications and Vash's enhanced strength and reflexes, the more unsavory pokemon in Kanto don't stand a chance. The first thing they encounter is an angry Ursaring, who tries to use its bulky bear form as a battering ram and run over the gatherers. The second is a strangely territorial herd of fire-wolf-like Arcanine that seems to think they own this rocky part of the realm. However they manage to get away, Vash and Varian seem to be hot on the trail of the right kind of pepper, though, if the seeds left behind are any indication. A Pidgey appears in the sky and circles above, then lands on a nearby branch. It seems to say 'follow me', flying just ahead. But where could it be leading them? Eventually the answer is made clear when they ascend the top of a bare, rocky hill. At the top are several hot pepper plants matching the scent profile of the trail they've been following. There are definitely more than 5, so they may be able to bring home more than that if they want extra credit.

For their extremely successful escapade into the realm, Vash and Varian receive $5000 each, two bottles of the hottest hot sauce known to man (it will let you breathe a small stream of fire up to three times a day) as well as free meals at Wanmin Restaurant for a month.
