[Aw crap. He recognizes that name alright. Elliot would prefer to crawl back into his depression blankets, but he should check on this kid]

Souta. How are you feeling?

[There is a noticable delay before he starts typing. Souta doesn't want to lie, but he also doesn't want to burden others who are already going through so much.]

[And they all are.]

Tired. It's a good thing I finished my report early.

[Them again, it might have provided a good distraction from all the complicated thoughts he's stuck with now.]

[Oh Souta...]

Yeah...though it's really not what I had in mind when we talked about that.

Please, don't ever do that again.

['Please, don't ever do that again.']

[Souta's heart sinks a little, recalling the scene he remembered during the ballgame. If that memory is be believed, he will in fact try to sacrifice himself again. Or perhaps has done so in the past.]

[But he also doesn't want to worry Elliot. So rather than sharing that, he uses the words he heard in the memory to better understand Elliot's position.]

["Don't try to handle this by yourselves! You're not the only ones who don't want to lose the people they care about!"]

I'm sorry. I was so focused on stopping the ghost, I didn't consider how it would affect everyone else.

[And now they had lost friends. Even if the ghost might have killed more, the deaths still hurt.]

[Seeing that message makes his heart sink. Yeah, this is exactly why it wasn't a good thing to put kids that age into that kind of danger. They haven't developed the skills to think things through like this, to consider the ramifications. He's very sure Souta just saw the problem and immediately wanted to help]

I know. You were trying to help. But if there's either another deadly competition, which I HOPE there isn't ....please leave it to the adults to decide what should be done, okay?

[At LEAST wait until you're old enough to see an R-rated movie before you do an R-rated activity like death soccer ok]

[That is a good part of it. However, there was also a slightly more selfish reason that Souta had worked so hard to stop the attacks: to protect his father. As long as La Llorona had been in Kaisou, there was a chance that he might lose the only family that Souta had. In his panic, however, it failed to occur to him that he had risked the exact same thing for his father.]

Okay.

[Souta doesn't really see how having the adults take his place would be better, but he can agree nonetheless. (Not that it will stop him from protecting others if the situation comes up, but he doesn't realize that yet.)]

[Meanwhile he will stew in his guilt and other complicated feelings.]

[This poor kid...he may not have died, but he still went through a lot out there. Elliot's gonna hold off on lecturing anymore and...]

How's the clover growing?

[He appreciates it, even if Souta has kind of earned a lecture. His soccer teammates already chewed him out, and even if they hadn't, he already feels pretty miserable.]

[The question does offer a nice reprieve and an excuse to go out on the balcony where the flowers are kept.]

They've grown really fast. The leaves are already out, but no clover flowers yet. Though it looks like they are drooping a bit lately.

[That would be because of him. His sadness has the plants feeling bad for Souta. The downside of being closer to your garden.]

Wow, that is fast! I bet they'll flower soon enough at this rate.

Drooping huh? Well I assume you're taking care of them properly if they're already growing as much as they are.... maybe they're sad?

[That sounds silly but you know what, it's possible]

[As it turns out, clover is a fast growing plant, especially in warm weather.]

Maybe. They're still pretty young.

[Souta would probably be more optimistic about the chances if he wasn't in such a bad headspace. Or at the very least he would present the lack of flowers in a more positive way.]

[Oh. He gets a sinking feelings in his gut as the truth sets in.]

You're right. The clover is sad because of me.

[Because he is feeling bad, and his plants feel sorry for him. They wouldn't be in this state if it weren't for him. What has he done.]

[This kid is feeling guilty over clovers. whoops]

I'm sure they're just worried about you.

Why don't you try to do something to cheer them up? Like a story, or sing them a nice song. It might cheer you up too.

[Look, he's very delicate. Trying to help the god of the dead and the city at the same time still got people killed. At least one of those people was someone he was also trying to help. And now he's responsible for his flowers' sorry state?]

[Souta would probably spiral more if not for the ping of another reply. A story or song? The flowers do seem to like hearing from him. It might just do the trick.]

[Which might seem an odd comment to make, but Souta don't really notice. He's quickly accepted that talking to flowers for him is a two-way deal.]

[Not such a bad thing if it means company is right on his balcony when he needs it.]

[The conversation...does that mean he can talk to plants?

You know a couple months ago, this would've thrown him off. But after all the crazy crap he's dealt with recently -- it really says something that this barely crosses his radar as weird]

Mm. And I'm sure they'd be happy to chat too.

[He absolutely can! And while it might not have helped much at all with the latest Spirit Realm, Souta must admit the power suits him.]
