Personality: The one way to describe Isabela’s predicament is that she is shaped by having to deal and live with the pressures and expectations put before her as the golden child among her family or Señorita Perfecta as Mirabel once called her. It is not easy being the eldest grandchild of the family who has high standards to live by, caused by the trauma her Abuela Alma went through from losing her husband (and Isabela’s grandfather) Pedro 50 years before the story starts. The pressure she places onto her children and grandchildren to make use of their gifts has caused the family to suffer internally in their own way and, in Isabela’s case, she has to deal with to be the golden standard while consciously needing to ignore her own desires for the family, the encanto/enchantment, and the town they live in.
Outwardly, she comes off as a graceful and elegant lady with a bit of haughty arrogance who grows beautiful flowers and doesn’t seem to do no wrong, except that it is a facade for a woman who has to repress her true self in order to live up to the image of the golden child. Deep down, she finds living by Alma’s expectations too much for her and she really wants to live her life as she intends it to be and explore and experiment with the other options she could do with her gift; it is implied from her character song that she truly has a deep interest in botany and horticulture in general. She has become rather jaded by how people expect her to be as pretty as her flowers and she has grown to hate her situation of needing to live up to the expectations of others, yearning to be more independent and be in control of her life. But because of the pressures surrounding her, she had to hide her true feelings, desires, and dreams in order to make her family and especially Alma proud, even if it means having to marry the man her cousin Dolores has feelings for, Mariano. It is even revealed that she had only agreed to marry him as an obligation to her family during the fight with Mirabel in her room, stating that she didn’t want to get into a marriage with him by her own will. She is even seen visibly upset about having to accept the marriage proposal while singing the last parts of We Don’t Talk About Bruno and also shows shock when Dolores reveals that Mariano wants to have 5 kids with her (Isabela) that she involuntarily grows flowers on her hair as a response. She can get very annoyed by Camilo’s antics when he takes on Mariano’s form that she has to put up flower petals to shut his mouth while (secretly) expressing her displeasure of having to say ‘yes’ to a man she doesn’t have any genuine feelings for. Not to mention that she can come off as rude at times and is able to show anger when pushed to her limits, which is how Mirabel caused her to have an epiphany about being able to do more than just growing pretty flowers.
While it is not shown much in canon, she deeply cares for her family and does a lot to make them them proud, showing off a selfless and loyal side to her like when she tries to help in saving the miracle candle during the Casita’s destruction. While her relationship with Mirabel is strained and distant for most of the film and she had a slightly negative view on her uncle Bruno for his vision of her future initially, she is shown to be close to Luisa, her aunt Pepa, and Dolores as shown when she begins to worry for Luisa when her strength was slowly fading away moments leading to the dinner proposal, when she tries to calm Pepa down with a bouquet of roses, and when she and Dolores hold hands and they hug each other while witnessing Antonio’s gift ceremony respectively. Upon letting go of her golden child image, she becomes less restrained and begins to lighten up, no longer feeling burdened by the weigh of people’s expectations and the pressure of being perfect.
Her relationship with Mirabel is one filled with strain and hostility as she once told her to not get in the way, and, when Mariano and his mom come over for the dinner proposal, that she ‘doesn’t want a word out of her’ during the dinner. She can be hard on her and does seem to be aloof towards her youngest sister and she in return finds her annoying to the point of seeing her as a spoiled and selfish person, both of them unaware how much the other is suffering from dealing with familial pressures. It is also hinted and implied that she may be jealous of Mirabel for not having to deal with the same pressures she has to deal with on a daily basis. It is only when Mirabel learns to see that there is more to Isa than her seemingly perfect façade that the two of them can build a better relationship together.
Through having an honest conversation and reconciling with Mirabel and with the support of the rest of the Madrigals, Isabela learns that she can be more than just her gift and she doesn’t need to be the perfect golden child to be her own person, with her hair and dress eventually getting dyed by different colored pollen and letting her gift to grow other plant life like sundews and cacti, gleefully letting out a rebellious side of her that she had been hiding for so long. She has also learned to express her creativity and interest in plants much more freely than she has done before. She is still a young lady with a lot of things to learn and do who still deeply cares for and loves her family and the community. But she is now learning not to be restrained by other people’s expectations and that it’s okay to be yourself and explore your interests within your own terms.
Time of Arrival to Kaisou: Immediately Items: Just the clothes she is wearing Retained Ability: She will definitely be retaining her gift to grow plants. Originally back at home, she can only grow vines and beautiful flowers, but following after a heartwarming reconciliation with Mirabel, she has since expanded into growing a variety of plant life including cacti, sundews, and trees. But once she arrives at Kaisou, she is going to be stuck with just growing flowers and vines in small quantities.
