Character Name: Urianger Augurelt Canon: FFXIV Canon History:Wiki link here! Canon Personality: Aloof and cryptic - Known for his overly-formal, poetic speech, and for using ten words where one will do, Urianger can accidentally come off as standoffish or distant if you aren't used to his unusual mannerisms.
Caring - Urianger has stayed by his friends through thick and thin, even when he could have returned to his homeland and a safer, easier life. Most of the mistakes he's made have been in the name of helping others or sparing them pain.
Calculating - Raised in a land with a need-to-know ethos around any potentially dangerous knowledge, he tends to fall back on their methods when he comes upon a dilemma, working through the moral calculus on his own to spare the most people the most suffering...even if that means keeping secrets from his friends and taking every burden of painful choice onto his own shoulders.
Empathetic - A more recent development, as Urianger has stepped out of libraries and into the role of healer, he's become wiser in the ways of emotion and better able both to cope with his own and to help others through their various traumas. He's particularly good with children, and enjoys looking after them.
Patient - To a fault, even: terribly aware of the potential consequences of hasty action, Urianger will wait and assess a situation until he can determine that acting upon it would be both useful and necessary. He has occasionally waited too long, and part of his growth has been learning when to act decisively, but ultimately his first impulse will still always be to act precisely rather than quickly.
Awkward - For all that Urianger is the shoulder you want there to lean on when you're in crisis, he's not very good with starting conversations or interacting with people in a day to day sense, content as often as not with the company of books. He's confident and competent in his areas of expertise, but it's easy to fluster him if a conversation starts to go off-script.
AU Name: N/A AU Birthday: We're given no canon info, so I'm going to pick March 7 and make him a Pisces
AU History: Urianger's birth family lives elsewhere. They were well-to-do but neglectful and barely present for his childhood: although his physical needs were met, he received very little attention or guidance from his parents, and more or less raised himself reading books, with some occasional assistance and guidance from the teachers and neighbors who noticed that this kid did everything on his own. He had enough spiritual power to see ghosts and magic, which contributed to a quirky personality as he grew that kept him from making many friends his own age; he was never able to determine if either of his parents shared this gift, as they wouldn't speak of it.
Unsurprisingly, he moved out to college on a scholarship as soon as he was able. Talented in math and science, he ended up with a degree in mathematics that could have led to a promising career, but every path ahead of him seemed too closed-in for the things he couldn't avoid knowing about the world. Instead he cut ties entirely with everything he'd ever known, moved to Kaisou, and started up a magic shop.
He's been here a little over five years now, and he's established himself as a small business owner. The goods in the front of the shop keep the lights on: tarot cards and readings, metaphysics books, crystals. And then there's a little room in the back where only proven magic users are allowed, with a much smaller collection of genuine magical components and learning materials. Kaisou has proved a good place to learn more about magic and the occult, with the Spirit Vein in the night sky, and he's been putting his research skills to good use.
AU Personality Differences: He'll be a little bit less reticent and more independent, what with standing on his own and not having an organization to fall back on, but otherwise I expect him to stay pretty close to canon.
Element: Shadow Purchased Powers: General - 2 points - Medium level healing General - 2 points - Detect if something/someone is magic and general information on element-type and strength Shadow - 2 points - Low level shadow manipulation
