lightningbearer: (who wants to be a hero?)

Hello hello questions on some canon ability stuff and how it would be handled as far as regain pricing! Since that may or may not impact decisions if I app.

So Geddoe here is from the Suikoden series. If you're already familiar with Suikoden and how the runes and True Runes work go ahead and skip the next two paragraphs to go straight to the questions. In case you're not familiar, I'll give a quick overview:

In the Suikoden setting, magic is based on "runes". These aren't in the sense of written letters though, rather it refers to basically what's basically like... a sort of crystalized magic that can be affixed to a person, which then allows that person access to the rune's specific brand of magic. These vary from runes that simply have passive effects or allow the use of special skills, to ones that have a set of spells that the user can cast from. There are many, MANY kinds of runes, but generally most people can only have 1-2 (rarely 3) affixed at a time. In-universe it takes a specialist rune sage to affix/remove runes, but most decent-sized towns have one; given that the game series as a whole leans heavily on story and gameplay integration whenever possible, it's reasonable to assume that this does indeed mean most people don't have the knowhow to affix or remove runes on their own.

All of the runes are presumed to originate from the 27 True Runes. The fanwiki has a pretty detailed writeup on those here but the cliffnotes version is that the True Runes are extremely powerful, have some degree of will of their own, and in-universe are believed to leftover fragments of the powers that created the world itself. The True Runes generally choose their own bearers, grant said bearers immortality, and some people in the setting basically consider them gods. They've also been known to go on out of control rampages when their bearers lose control/are gravely injured/the rune just feels like it, depending on the circumstances and specific True Rune in question. In other words there's certain core powers and attributes they all have, but beyond that there's some variety in how each True Rune interacts with the world at large and humans in particular.

Now, onto the questions!

1. Given that any rune must be physically affixed to the user's body (or to a weapon, in some of the games) in order to be used, and the True Runes cannot be removed by ordinary means anyway, would an OU character who has a rune or two be able to arrive WITH the rune(s) already affixed, just depowered unless/until points are spent?

2. While most of the True Rune powers are already covered by the various regains (magic, immortality, visions of the future), one notable thing they do that's not is occasionally showing memories of previous bearers to the current one in dreams and visions. Would this require a regain like other powers, or would it count similar to how there's no cost for AUs to regain past life memories as it's literally JUST the memories of the rune's prior bearer(s)?

3. Would it be possible for non-unique runes that can be purchased/found in the game to be acquired as a regain, even if the character doesn't necessarily use that particular rune in the game's story? How would pricing work given that some runes have a mix of available spells? (e.g. a water rune has mostly healing magic, but still 1 or 2 offensive spells)

4. Pivoting from the runes into character abilities! One of the skills many characters in Suikoden III can have is "magic resist", which is literally what it says on the tin: flat reduction of damage taken by magic attacks in general. Would this be regainable and if so what kind of cost would it be?

5. Another character ability question: Geddoe here happens to have the relatively rare ability of "magic repel" in the game. What it does is give the character a passive chance to reflect a magic attack back on the caster. (In Geddoe's case, it maxes out at about a 15% chance, if that makes a difference!) Would this be regainable and if so, how much would it cost?

6. LAST QUESTION (I hope) again with character abilities! Geddoe also has access in the game to the rare "stun" ability, which gives a chance to potentially stun/paralyze the enemy upon a melee hit. This is NOT classified as a magic ability in the game, it's implied to literally just be hitting so hard the enemy is, well, stunned. Would this need a regain purchase?

7. Wait I realized I have one more SORRY so given the above info about the True Runes, as far as other characters being able to sense magical/spiritual stuff, how would that come across in Kaisou? Just really powerful magic, or would it also be reasonable to say it would ping as divine as well?
